Thingvellir, Almannagjá , Geysir, Strokkur, Gullfoss and Friðheimar
We begin our journey by driving to Þingvellir National Park, a place of immense historical and geological importance. It was here, in the year 930, that Iceland’s parliament—Althingi—was founded, making it the oldest continuously operating parliament in the world. Since 2004, Þingvellir has proudly held a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
We’ll explore this spectacular natural site on foot, entering through Almannagjá gorge—dramatic evidence of the rift between two tectonic plates. Þingvellir is one of the best places in the world to witness a divergent plate boundary, where the Eurasian and North American plates pull away from each other. The landscape here tells the story of centuries of earthquakes and continental drift.
But Þingvellir is not only about geology. For Icelanders, it holds deep cultural significance. For centuries, people gathered here for parliamentary sessions, socializing, resolving disputes, and even finding a spouse.
From Þingvellir, we head to the geothermal area of Geysir, home to the famous Strokkur geyser, which erupts every 5–10 minutes. Watching hot water shoot high into the sky is a thrilling reminder of the island’s volcanic energy bubbling just beneath the surface.
We’ll spend around an hour at Geysir before continuing to Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. This two-tiered cascade is not only a breathtaking sight but also carries stories from Iceland’s past, which your guide will be happy to share.
Lunch is optional at the Geysir visitor center or at Friðheimar, a unique greenhouse restaurant where tomatoes are grown year-round using geothermal energy. Here you can enjoy a delicious lunch in a warm, green oasis.
To finish the day, we recommend a relaxing visit to the Secret Lagoon—Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, located in a natural hot spring area. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring before we head back to Reykjavík.
